A bearded, armored figure sits rigidly upright on a stone throne carved with ram's heads — Aries, cardinal fire, the sign of initiating force. Unlike the Empress's open, living landscape, his backdrop is barren red mountains: authority exercised over, and perhaps somewhat apart from, the natural fertility she represents. Waite reads the Emperor as 'the virile power' complementing the Empress's fertile power — the two together forming a father/mother pairing at the head of the Major Arcana's first act.
